We were transferred by 4WD bus from our accommodation at 11 am and driven the 70 km to view the historic Durack Homestead Museum just near Lake Argyle.
The homestead was originally built in 1894 by the Duracks on Argyle Downs Station. Before Lake Argyle began to fill it was decided to relocate the homestead so that it could be preserved forever. Each block in the house was numbered before dismantling and then stored for several years before rebuilding it in its present location.
The tombstones were also removed but the graves remained in place and now sit around 30 metres below the surface of the lake.
Our cruise consisted of a swim before lunch and then again just before sunset. The estimated 25,000 freshwater crocodiles in the lake are all found at the southern end. Thankfully they got that right.
Unfortunately the lovely blue skies that one experiences in this part of the country for most of the year, does not lend itself to great sunset shots.
